[Back to creatures]

A sentient tree with twisted branches and gnarled roots, the Akateko possesses a sinister ability to ensnare unsuspecting prey. With a mastery of illusion, it projects psychic images under its branches that draw victims closer, luring them beneath its leafy canopy. The projected images often take the form of alluring beauties, lost children, or distressed figures.

Once a creature comes beneath the Akateko’s boughs, the monstrous tree attacks. Its gnarled branches end in horrible claws that tear flesh and break bone.

The Akateko is not a naturally occurring plant, but rather the result of foul desecration of the natural world. The malevolent presence of an Eldritch horror, a corrupt Fiend, or even a group of sinister cultists might result in the creation of an Akateko. Because they do not occur naturally, it is difficult to identify an Akateko simply by looking at it, as it might emerge from any type of mundane tree.
