Rare Disease

Lethality: High

Transmissibility: Medium

Infection and Contagion: When a creature breathes for 1 minute within 10 ft of an infected creature or infected meat, make a +8 attack against the creature’s FORT. If the creature is an ungulate (such as a sheep or cow) or a humanoid with ungulate features (such as a satyr or minotaur), then roll 2d20 and take the higher. On a hit, the creature contracts Anthrax.

A creature that eats infected meat is automatically infected.

Outbreak: If one or more creatures have Anthrax and are not quarantined, then 2d8 additional creatures gain Anthrax.

Symptoms: A creature gains progressively worse symptoms the longer that they are infected. Once a creature is infected, they become infectious and can spread the disease 1d8 hours later. Once the creature is infectious, then it gains the following symptoms at the start of each of the following days. These effects are cumulative.

  • Day 1: Sickened
  • Day 2: Gain Fatigue
  • Day 3: Chilled
  • Day 4: Helpless
  • Day 5: Stunned (this replaces Chilled)
  • Day 6: Dead

Ungulates and humanoids with ungulate features progress through these symptoms at double the rate other targets do, so they die after 3 days if untreated.

Treatment: Treating Anthrax requires intensive treatment. If a creature remains bedridden for 24 hours and receives a successful DC 30 INT/Medicine check, then their symptoms revert by 1 day and do not progress on the next day. If this removes Day 1’s symptoms, then the creature is cured, but remains Sickened for 24 more hours.
