Native to the plane of Shadowcroft, scarecrows are humanoids constructed of straw and blood. They often dwell in small communes in the hinterlands outside of towns and cities, bringing them into ongoing conflict with farmers and inter-city traders. Scarecrows can go for great lengths of time without eating, but when they do eat, they require fresh blood. Scarecrow communes attempting to maintain peace will feed on small game or sickly livestock rather than humanoids.

Once per year as summer turns to fall, scarecrows undergo a ritual known as “the harvest.” This ritual involves creating new scarecrows by binding sheaves of straw, twigs, and threshed grass into humanoid shapes and then bathing them in humanoid blood. In the uncommon event of a symbiotic existence between a scarecrow commune and a humanoid village, the humanoids will offer a blood drive during this harvest, which is exhausting but nonlethal for the humanoids and preserves peace between the two groups.
